Best Hotels in Yalong Bay, Sanya: 5 Honest Resort Options for Beach and Swimming
Sanya is a beach city on Hainan Island, China's tropical island. It has been one of the destinations travelers have asked us about most often this year. It's especially popular among families, couples, and anyone who wants to combine a beach holiday with a trip to China without paying the prices of many international island resorts.
Hainan also has its own regional visa-free policy. Ordinary-passport holders from 59 eligible countries may enter and stay in Hainan for up to 30 days for reasons such as tourism, business, visiting family, or medical treatment. Read our Hainan visa-free guide before booking, because the rules still depend on your passport and travel plans.
If you want to go to Sanya but aren't sure where to stay, this is our suggestion. Yalong Bay is the area we'd recommend first if you mainly want the sea, the beach, and water you can actually swim in. That last point matters: at some Sanya beaches the sand looks beautiful, but swimming isn't always allowed, often because of high waves or dangerous rip currents, which are strong currents that can pull a swimmer out to sea. Yalong Bay is the best area for good hotels, beautiful swimming pools, easy beach access, and restaurants nearby. Depending on the hotel, it suits families, solo travelers, and groups of friends. That's why we focused on it.
How we researched these hotels
None of the hotels here paid us or sponsored this comparison. It's the same kind of research we do when we help clients choose where to stay. Since Sanya is a very popular destination, we wanted to share it for free, to help travelers get a feel for the hotels and pick the right one.
We focused mainly on larger resorts and recognized hotel groups because they have far more guest feedback and usually provide a fuller range of services. We read recent positive and negative reviews and looked for patterns involving cleanliness, beach access, room condition, food and staff.
We keep our research cautious on purpose. Almost all guests at these hotels leave happy, and the real stay is usually much better than our summary makes it sound. We still list the bad points below, but only to help you compare two similar hotels. Don't read them as things that will definitely happen to you.
We also didn't rely on the star rating alone. On its own, it doesn't tell much, so we read the real comments and looked for the same problems coming up again and again. You can check any point yourself by opening the hotel's newest reviews before you book.
Quick comparison
The prices below are examples from a Trip.com search for September 20–25, 2026, for one room, two adults and five nights. They are not fixed prices and may change significantly by room type, cancellation policy and travel date.
| Hotel option | Example starting price | Beach | Room condition | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Mercure or Swissôtel | From about US$43–45 per night | Public, about 10 minutes away | Old | Lowest-price balanced option |
| Yalong Bay Mangrove Tree Resort | From about US$115 per night | Private | Old but clean | Private beach and value |
| MGM GRAND Sanya | From about US$143 per night | Private and very close | Slightly old, exceptionally clean | Complete resort experience |
| Sheraton Sanya Yalong Bay Resort | From about US$104 per night | Direct beach access | Quite old | One of the most beautiful pools in Yalong Bay |
| Blossom Land Boutique Sanya Yalong Bay Resort | From about US$66 per night | Public, about 800 metres away | Very new | Modern rooms and quiet atmosphere |
1. Grand Mercure Sanya Yalong Bay or Swissôtel Sanya Yalong Bay
Example price: about US$45 per night at Grand Mercure and US$43 at Swissôtel in our sample search.
Grand Mercure and Swissôtel are two separate hotels sharing the same territory. They can be considered together because guests use the same facilities and the experience is broadly similar. Some reviews also mention occasional movement or upgrades between the two properties when availability allows, but this should never be expected or treated as guaranteed.
This is the most affordable option in the comparison for travelers who still want to be reasonably close to the sea. The public beach is around a 10-minute walk away, and there are restaurants and shops nearby, which is useful if you don't want to eat every meal inside the hotel.
The main compromise is age. Both the regular rooms and villas can feel old, although reviews generally describe them as being kept in decent condition. The shared resort area includes two swimming pools, a spa, gym, table tennis, billiards and card rooms, so there's enough to do when you're not at the beach.
Service is usually reviewed positively for the price. Food appears acceptable, with some Western options, although lunch and dinner selections may be limited compared with more expensive resorts.
Advantages
- One of the lowest prices among the main Yalong Bay resorts
- About a 10-minute walk from the beach
- Restaurants and shops nearby
- Two pools and several indoor leisure facilities
- Choice of regular rooms and villas
- They share the same territory, so you can use the facilities of both hotels
Possible disadvantages
- Rooms and facilities feel old
- The beach is public rather than private
- Lunch and dinner variety may be limited
Our view: a sensible budget compromise. You can find newer rooms elsewhere at a similar price, but those hotels may be farther from the sea or offer fewer international food choices.

2. Yalong Bay Mangrove Tree Resort
Example price: about US$115 per night in our sample search.
Mangrove Tree is a strong option for travelers who care more about a beautiful private beach, swimming pools and attentive service than having a modern room. Guests repeatedly praise the beach, the clean water and the overall resort environment.
The rooms and facilities are older, but they're generally described as clean and well maintained. Reviews frequently mention daily room cleaning, fresh towels and regular bedding changes.
Guests are usually assigned a personal service contact or "butler," often through WeChat. This gives you one person to message about requests or problems during the stay. Some staff members receive exceptional praise, including a butler named Coral, although the quality of service may depend on the person assigned.
Breakfast is generally well reviewed. Vegetarian choices shouldn't be hard to find. There may be more Chinese food than Western food here, but there are still some Western options.
Advantages
- Highly praised private beach
- Clean water, beach towels and attractive pools
- Usually includes a personal WeChat service contact
- Daily cleaning and regular linen changes
- Good breakfast and reasonable lunch and dinner variety
- Strong value for a private-beach resort
Possible disadvantages
- Rooms and facilities feel older
- Service can vary depending on the staff member assigned
- Fewer Western food options than Chinese ones
Our view: good value if a private beach matters more to you than having a new room.
3. MGM GRAND Sanya
Example price: about US$143 per night in our sample search.
MGM GRAND is a strong all-round option in this comparison. It offers a prime Yalong Bay location, a beautiful private beach close to the hotel, clean outdoor pools and the level of service guests expect from a five-star resort.
The property includes a beach bar, beach volleyball, spa, sauna, massage facilities and a gym. Water activities may also be arranged through the hotel, including diving-related services, depending on weather and availability. There are extensive children's facilities, so it's particularly suitable for families, although this also means there may be many children around the resort.
Like Mangrove Tree, MGM commonly provides a personal butler or service contact. Reviews repeatedly praise the service and the staff, and the hotel has many returning guests. Some say they come back just for the service. When guests keep returning like this, it's a useful sign that the service is consistently good.
The rooms and some facilities aren't brand new, but cleanliness is repeatedly described as exceptional. Breakfast is generally considered good. Some international guests would prefer a broader Western selection, while Chinese guests are often extremely positive about the variety.
Advantages
- Prime location with a beautiful private beach
- Excellent staff and personal service
- Exceptionally clean pools, rooms and public spaces
- Full spa, fitness and beach facilities
- Strong children's amenities
- Many repeat guests
Possible disadvantages
- Some rooms and facilities feel slightly dated
- The family focus can mean many children
- Some international guests would prefer more Western breakfast choices
Our view: a strong choice for travelers who want dependable service, a private beach and a complete resort experience and are comfortable paying more for it.
4. Sheraton Sanya Yalong Bay Resort
Example price: about US$104 per night in our sample search.
Sheraton is a good choice for travelers who care more about the gardens and pools than the room itself. Guests consistently describe its public areas as among the most beautiful in Yalong Bay, with five outdoor pools, tropical landscaping and direct beach access.
Facilities include golf access, beach volleyball, tennis, table tennis and a spa. Beach umbrellas and towels are provided, and surfing lessons may be available at certain times depending on weather and operating conditions. Airport pickup can also be arranged for an additional charge.
The hotel is large, clean and well maintained, and the staff are usually described as friendly, smiling and polite. Breakfast receives good reviews and the selection is large, although opinions about the wider food quality and variety are more mixed.
The main weakness is the age of the rooms. The property is around 21 years old, and guests frequently notice this inside the accommodation even when the public spaces still look impressive. A small number of older reviews mentioned dampness or mould in individual rooms. This wasn't a recurring issue in the 2026 reviews we checked, but it's worth inspecting recent room-specific feedback before choosing a category.
The beachfront resort area connects naturally with neighboring properties, making it easy to walk around the whole resort area and explore nearby beach sections. Access to another hotel's private facilities can vary, so this should be treated as a convenient walking environment rather than a guarantee that every neighboring pool or service is included.
Advantages
- Five outdoor pools and beautiful tropical gardens
- Direct beach access with towels and umbrellas
- Golf, tennis, table tennis, beach volleyball and spa facilities
- Large, well-reviewed breakfast selection
- Friendly staff and strong cleanliness
- Easy to walk around the beachfront resort area
Possible disadvantages
- Rooms are noticeably dated
- Older reviews occasionally mentioned dampness or mould in individual rooms
- Food quality outside breakfast receives mixed comments
- The resort is large, so getting around can mean long walks
Our view: choose Sheraton for its pools, gardens and beach environment, not for a modern bedroom.
5. Blossom Land Boutique Sanya Yalong Bay Resort
Example price: about US$66 per night in our sample search.
Blossom Land is the exception in this comparison because it recently opened. It offers new rooms, modern design and a quieter boutique atmosphere at a price below the established beachfront resorts.
Early guests describe the hotel as clean, spacious and peaceful, with few crowds, little noise, a good pool and a well-reviewed breakfast. Restaurants and shops are nearby, daily cleaning and fresh towels are provided, and laundry facilities are available.
The hotel isn't directly on the beach. The public beach is around 800 metres away, and a shuttle is provided. For travelers who strongly prefer a new room, this may be a reasonable trade: the beach is still accessible, but the property doesn't offer the same private beachfront experience as MGM or Mangrove Tree.
The biggest uncertainty is its short operating history. At the time of our research, it had only around 80 reviews, compared with thousands or tens of thousands for the long-established resorts. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, but there's less evidence about long-term consistency.
Service also appears to be settling in. Some guests receive excellent help, while others mention needing to request extra towels or small items. Staff usually respond when asked, but the systems may not yet be as polished as at a mature five-star property.
Advantages
- Recently opened, with new, modern rooms
- Quiet boutique atmosphere with fewer crowds
- Good pool and breakfast
- Restaurants and shops nearby
- Daily cleaning and laundry facilities
- Competitive introductory pricing
Possible disadvantages
- Far fewer reviews than the established resorts
- Service consistency isn't yet fully proven
- The beach is public rather than private
- About 800 metres from the beach, although a shuttle is available
Our view: a good choice for travelers who prioritize a genuinely new room, quiet surroundings and lower pricing over a private beachfront location.
Which Yalong Bay hotel should you choose?
The main trade-off in Yalong Bay is age. Many of its established resorts were built years ago, when the best beachfront land was still available. This is why guest reviews so often describe the rooms as dated. In many cases, however, the hotels remain clean and well maintained, and their beaches, gardens and service are stronger than those of newer properties farther inland.
The decision in Yalong Bay is usually not whether a hotel is "good" or "bad." All five options can work well. The real question is which compromise matters least to you:
- an older room in exchange for a private beach
- a higher price for stronger service
- a public beach in exchange for a new room
- a family-focused resort with more children
- a lower-cost hotel with fewer food choices
Once you know which of these matters most to you, choose the hotel that fits your needs best. You can also compare more options on the main booking sites before you decide.
Price and booking notes
The sample prices in this article came from the same five-night search, but they should be used only to understand the rough price tiers. Sanya hotel prices can move sharply around Chinese public holidays, school holidays, weekends and periods of better beach weather.
When comparing two offers, check whether the rate includes:
- taxes and service charges
- breakfast
- free cancellation
- the exact room or villa category
- extra-bed or child charges
- airport pickup
A slightly higher refundable rate can be safer than the lowest non-refundable price, particularly when your trip also depends on flight schedules or visa-free eligibility.
FAQ
Which Yalong Bay hotel is the best overall option in this comparison?
MGM GRAND Sanya is often seen as a strong all-round option, especially for travelers who want a private beach, attentive service, cleanliness and a full five-star experience. Its main compromise is that some rooms and facilities feel slightly dated. The best fit still depends on your own priorities.
Which hotel is the newest option?
Blossom Land Boutique Sanya Yalong Bay Resort recently opened. It's a good choice for modern rooms and a quieter atmosphere, but it has fewer reviews and no private beach.
Which hotels have private beaches?
Yalong Bay Mangrove Tree Resort and MGM GRAND Sanya are the clearest private-beach choices in this comparison. Sheraton has direct beach access, while Grand Mercure, Swissôtel and Blossom Land use public beach areas.
Why are so many Yalong Bay hotel rooms dated?

Bottom Line
Yalong Bay is one of Sanya's strongest areas for travelers who want both swimming and a full resort atmosphere. Its main limitation is that many of the best-located hotels are older, so choosing a property usually means balancing room age against beach access, gardens, service and price.
MGM GRAND is a strong all-round resort, Mangrove Tree is good value for a private beach, Sheraton stands out for its pools and public spaces, Grand Mercure and Swissôtel are the lowest-cost option near the sea, and Blossom Land is the newest and quietest.
All of them can be good choices when matched to the right priorities. Use this comparison to narrow the list, then verify your exact room category, recent reviews and cancellation terms before booking.
